Cross Country: AACA championships- St. Basil tops VJM for league title

Philly Burbs- Matt Welland
October 19, 2011

NEWTOWN TWP. — Emma Mahony said it was the best that the Villa Joseph Marie cross country team has run all season.
The Jems even earned the hardware to prove it.

Mahony finished in third place overall with a time of 19 minutes, 4.12 seconds — just three seconds ahead of fourth-place teammate Brenna Twomey.
Overall, the Jems had three finishers in the top 15 as they hoisted the AACA cross country championship’s team runner-up trophy for the first time in the event’s six-year history.
St. Basil Academy won the team championship team for the sixth straight year.
“As a team, it feels great,” said Mahony, who is no stranger to the AACA championship, having recorded the event’s sixth-best historical time (18:55.40) last year. “Brenna and I are usually out there with our individual times, but to place like this as a team means that our teammates were right there with us.
“We also had a little more confidence than usual. When the whole team is more confident, it seems like the results are more positive.”

Wellesley Townsman Athlete of the Week: Priyanka Fouda develops into leader of girls cross country team

Wicked Local Wellelsey- Gethin Coolbaugh
October 13, 2011

Emerging Elites, Priyanka Fouda

So often in sports, athletes are judged by their physical performance.

But there’s so much more to a successful performance than on-field production, something that Wellesley High senior Priyanka Fouda knows first hand. “Cross country is such a mental sport,” said Fouda. “It’s funny because I’m hyper aware of my limitations as a runner, yet I still fantasize about being super fast.”

Fouda has only been running cross country for four years, but in that time she has developed a true passion for the sport and almost everything that comes along with it.

“I love to compete,” Fouda said. “Cross country allows you to run against both the clock and an opponent. Each course has different terrain and presents a different challenge. I enjoy the strategic elements of the sport as well as the thrill of going fast.”

Whatever the challenge has been this season, Fouda has been up to it. Led by Fouda, the Raiders have won all of their meets, except against Weymouth, with Fouda winning all of her races.

But success doesn’t come easily in a sport like cross country and Fouda undergoes a rigorous training schedule in the offseason. In the summer, she runs around 40 miles per week and does core training. The hard work doesn’t stop once the season begins either. Fouda may be in good running shape during the school year, but she still has to face her biggest obstacle - herself.

[...]

Not only have Fouda’s teammates help her greatly, but also her many dedicated coaches.

“Coach [Lou] Pearlman was my first coach and he has supported me since freshmen year,” said Fouda. “He provides unconditional love. During the summer I train with a club team called Emerging Elites and my club coaches - head coach Fred Treseler, Bryan Dunn and Ashley Maheris - have helped me acquire self-discipline and focus. My love for the sport increases every summer I run with them.”

Cross Country Team Finds Strength in Numbers

Lynnfield Patch- Tom Layman
September 28, 2011

This season marks the biggest cross-country team that Joe DiBiase has put out there in his near 20-year run as the Pioneers head coach. With 40 boys and 30 girls running for Lynnfield this season, DiBiase has used help from other coaches on staff, but most importantly it might come down to some of his more experienced runners to help be coaches on the course and during training for meets.

---

The girls will be led by Lexi Buonfiglio, who already made some moves in her first meet this season in a tri-meet versus Hamilton-Wenham and Manchester-Essex. With a time of 19:54, Buonfiglio set a school record that has stood since 2004.

“She’s always been good,” said DiBiase. “Even her first year running she’s been really good. She always ran well for us. She’s a three-season runner now and a very talented runner.”

Buonfiglio was a Cape Ann League All-Star last season and also qualified for the All-State meet. Sammi Albanese also joined her teammate in the All-States last season, and she will captain the team with Buonfiglio, Patty Kloza and Marina Maylor.

The girls will look to make the All-State meet for the first time as a team since 1998, and the team depth might have a chance to tackle the challenging feat.

---

On the boys side, Andrew Drinkwater has battled a bit of injury, but he is back for another season as the top runner and leaders for the Pioneers.

“He’s done a great job,” said the head coach. “He leads by his hard work and by example.”

Brackett, Walmsley, and Pohl Set Record at Clipper Relays

Weston Patch- By Mike Stoller
September 13, 2011

Weston XC, 2011Could this season be as easy as 1-2-3 for the Weston girls' cross-country team? According to preview at MileSplitMass, that may very well be the case. The site calls Weston runners Olivia Brackett, Charlotte Walmsley and Abigail Pohl "just about as good a top three as there is in the state."

And that trio lived up to the hype on Sunday, breaking a meet record at the Clipper Relays in Newburyport.

Brackett, a Weston two-mile record holder, handed over the baton just behind the top ranked girl in the state Catarina Rocha from Peabody. Walmsley, a Mass Div. IV two-mile champion, soon passed the Peabody runner and built up a commanding minute lead during the second leg.

Cape Ann League Coaches Select Alison Lanois as 2011 CAL Scholarship Recipient

Gabe's Fund: Blog
May 23, 2011

Following a fantastic day of competition, and the first real sun we've seen all season, students, parents and coaches gathered for awards following the 2011 Cape Ann League Track & Field Championships at North Andover High School. Coach Steve Sawyer from Hamilton-Wenham called each scholarship candidate by name and congratulated them for their nomination and for the goodwill their performance excellence and sportsmanship has brought to their schools.

Coaches remarked that it was a very difficult decision to make again this year, many of the student-athletes are of very high caliber and very deserving of the scholarship. The Cape Ann League has always been known for the quality of it's Track & Field athletes, this year has been no different.

After the deliberations were complete Alison Lanois, the standout senior from Hamilton Wenham was announced as the 2011 Gabe's Fund scholarship winner. Alison also won CAL Championships in the 1 Mile and 800m events yesterday. She will look to build on first place finishes at upcoming Divisional and All-State Meets. Alison will attend Dartmouth College in the fall.

Athlete of the Week: Distance Runner Alison Lanois

Hamilton-Wenham Patch - by Brad Spiegel
May 16, 2011

No matter how much Alison Lanois wanted to be different than her sister, Emily, she couldn’t escape it. And that isn’t a bad thing.

Like Emily, Alison has excelled as one of the top distance runners in the state. And not to be outdone by her sister, who now is a sophomore at Columbia University, the Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School senior has shown she has academic prowess to go along with her athletic talents. She will be freshmen next year at Dartmouth College, where she will see her sister during Ivy League events.

Alison is picking up where she left off after cross country (she didn’t run indoor track as a senior) by running the fastest times in the 800 meters and mile in the Cape Ann League.

She has also set school records in the 2 mile (10:52.62) and distance medley relay (12:36.58) this season. That adds to her other outdoor record in 4 x 1 mile relay (21:49.21), and indoor records (4 x 800 relay, 9:51.17; mile, 5:05.23; and 2 mile, 11:23.55).

Ipswich cross-country teams enjoy success stories on both sides

Wicked Local, Ipswich - by Joshua Boyd
October 26, 2010

The Ipswich girls cross-country team is having its best year at 6-4. Boys cross-country runner Kieran Kinnare is undefeated. Sarah and Tina Keiran have provided a 1-2 punch on the girls side.

Headline performances all, but the overall picture is that life is good for Matthew Simms’ cross-country program.

As mentioned above, the girls are enjoying their best season, and Sarah Keiran has improved her time by “an incredible” 36 seconds per mile. She was already the team’s No. 1 runner last year, and now she’s hoping to do some damage in the postseason meets in November.

“She still has more good races ahead of her this year and she can expect to make more big improvements in the years to come,” said Simms, about the sophomore.

Her twin sister Tina has been just behind her this year, and “has been critical to the success of the team.”

AYF Olympics 2010: Andrew Hintlian Inspired by All-American Dad

The Armenian Weekley - by Tom Vartabedian
October 17, 2010

Ask Andrew Hintlian what inspires him the most and there’s no deliberation with his thoughts.

“My dad,” he quickly confirms. “Although we’re different athletes running different events, he’s always been an inspiration to me.”

Son Andrew carved his very own niche in the distance events, much the same way he’s done at Winchester High School, where he’s a senior. Only, he runs for the Providence AYF, not Greater Boston.

He got his trifecta started with the 3,200-meter run in 11:56.6. The closest one to him was teammate Gary Dodakian (12:36.3). No Philly runner was anywhere in sight, bringing added glory to the “Varantians.”

Next came the 800 meters and once again Hintlian set the pace at 2:10.3, well ahead of Greater Boston’s Armen Arakelian (2:15.6).

The 1,600 meters was another non-Philly event. Hintlian covered the distance in a ho-hum time of 5:15 with another “Varantian” (Sevan Zobian) well in arrears at 5:38.5. Hintlian also did three relays

Add it up and it’s 15 points for the gangling runner with the fluid stride. Seems he ran only as hard as he wanted to this afternoon, given his history at Winchester High where he’s team captain.

His best times: 400 (51.9), 800 (1:58), mile (4:37), and 2-mile (10:10).

Overall, he was pleased, not jubilant by any stretch, considering the fatigue and all that’s going on back home with track and colleges. He’s looking into electrical engineering, hopefully on a track scholarship, given the fact he’s an honor roll student. A Division 2 school might be the perfect fit for the young star.

This past summer, Hintlian was enrolled in a program called “Emerging Elites” which toned his flexibility and polished the other rudiments of his sport.

“Andrew’s got a ton of potential,” said his dad. “He’s a better athlete than I was—and that’s saying something. I’ve seen a big change in him over the years, especially with his Armenian heritage. It’s gone beyond team boundaries and that’s what I’m truly happy about.”

Rookie Green takes first, Wachusett Invitational

www.telegram.com - by Craig Holt
October 24, 2010

Memorable finishes and first-time thrills were the dominant themes during yesterday’s 53rd annual Wachusett Invitational boys’ cross-country meet at Wachusett Regional’s 5-kilometer course.

St. John’s sophomore Jonathan Green, a first-year cross-country participant, won the Class A race in 16:12.7, the fastest time of the meet. Green was one of four Pioneer harriers to place in the top 10, and he helped St. John’s edge defending champion Wachusett. The Pioneers totaled 31 points while the Mountaineers stayed close with 33 points.

St. John’s also placed senior Dan Zawalich (second, 16:23.3), junior Joe Clark (fifth, 17:03.6) and senior Brendan McKeogh (eighth, 17:09.9) in the top 10. Zawalich also finished second last year.

“Overall it was a good race for our team, though the Bennies ran tough,” Zawalich said. “Our team has gotten good experience running in big meets out of the area (including the Ocean State Invitational and Brown Invitational), and we also have some good underclassmen. This race helps us check how we’re doing, and training, with the big races coming up.”

Reading — It doesn’t get any closer than this.

Micayla Oniskey, Sarah FosterWith the Middlesex League girls cross-country title on the line between two undefeated teams Tuesday, Lexington defeated Reading, 28-29, at RMHS.

AACE Cross Country Championships - Mahony finds silver lining

Philly Burbs - by Karen Sangillo
October 19, 2010

Hopefully Emma Mahony likes silver.

She owns a lot of it.

The junior at Villa Joseph Marie earned her third consecutive second-place finish at the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies cross country championship, held Tuesday at Tyler State Park.

Emma Mahony, Villa Joseph MarieMahony finished the 3.1 mile course in 18:55.41, behind defending champion Megan McGarrity of St. Basil, who won in 18:27.23.

“It really is like déjà vu,” Mahony said. “I really would like to win it once. But I’m happy because I (did my personal record) on this course by 20 seconds.

“I did want to win, but I felt a little off. I guess everyone has an off day and, unfortunately, I had one for this race. But I’m still very happy with the time I did, and our team did well.

“I’m looking forward to districts now. I feel like I’ve trained a lot harder this year and, since it’s my junior year, I really want to do well this year and make an impression. I haven’t really started looking at colleges yet, but I want to start showing them something.”

Lodge Wins 5K Bronco Invitational; Wishard Takes 3rd

Pepperdine Sports
October 16, 2010

It was an exciting morning for the Pepperdine's women's cross country team Saturday at Baylands Park as junior Lauren Lodge (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS) won Santa Clara's Bronco 5K Invitational with a personal best time of 16:50.4.

Lauren Lodge, PepperdineSenior Chelsea Wishard (Lawai, Hawai'i/Kauai HS) also posted a solid performance with her third-place mark of 16:57.8. Both she and Lodge have finished among the top five runners at all three invitationals this season, including ones at Irvine at Washington.

"It seemed like Lolo (Lodge) led the race wire-to-wire," said head coach Robert Radnoti. "Our original race strategy for her was to pick off and pass runner over the final 1000 meters, but after she opened up a 20-meter gap on the rest of the pack all she had to do to win was maintain that pace; and it was a super one at that.

Lodge finished the course 5.6 seconds ahead than runner-up and unattached competitor Kate Niehaus.

XC teams competing despite youth, size

Wicked Local, Sharon - by Doug Kyed
October 8, 2010

With a young squad and only one returning senior, the Sharon boys cross country team is building for tomorrow while putting up a fight in the Hockomock League in 2010.

Dan Scribner, Sharon HighThe Eagles lost to Foxboro on Tuesday in their final meet of the season by only eight points 24-32. Junior co-captains Dan Scribner and Ben Ryter led the way finishing second and fourth respectively for Sharon with times of 17:43 and 18:04.

“Although the boys team has yet to win a meet, we are consistently seeing major improvements from a lot of our runners, as the times show, and some great upcoming talent in a lot of our newer kids,” said Scribner.

“My expectations for the rest of the season are to keep up our hard work and great amounts of effort being put out there by our team as a whole,” said Scribner. “To keep working together is the key to Sharon doing well and beating some of the teams we were unable to play, due to big and little Hock separation, and even some of the ones we did play in the cross-country Hock Championships.”

Both the Watertown High boys and girls cross country teams were beaten by Reading and host Winchester at a tri-meet held on Tuesday.

Wins just keep piling up for Hamilton-Wenham girls cross country

Salem News - by Jean DePlacido
October 1, 2010

The Generals are off to another terrific start this season at 5-0, winning a dual meet and two tri-meets. And there seems to be no end in sight to their success, thanks to six seniors who have never lost a meet in their high school careers and a talented group of underclassmen that are learning the ropes. The seniors help the newcomers understand the tradition.

"Honestly, I really don't know the reason for it. But the wins just keep coming," said veteran coach Steve Sawyer, the architect of the Generals' track program. "At times it seems a bit out of control, but it's a beautiful experience for the coaches, kids and their parents...

The six seniors include captains Alison Lanois, Ashley Kang and Molly Herlihy along with Hannah Millimet, Avery Hennigar and Lizzie Woodbury. Millimet is out with a knee injury but should be back soon, while Kang has been battling through a knee problem.

Emily Lanois, who is now running at Columbia, was never beaten in her four years at H-W; her younger sister Alison wants to carry on that incredible streak. Every team in the state, she acknowledged, knows they have to watch out for Hamilton-Wenham.

"There's pressure there, and one of the challenges is encouraging the girls to enjoy the wins. It's been so long since we lost that sometimes we don't get excited enough about the victories," Alison Lanois said. "You have to rally around that concept.

"Coach Sawyer will tell us that the race we just won is past, and we have to focus on tomorrow. We know we can't take any team for granted. There are always new freshmen with talent (on opposing teams), and we definitely have a target on our backs. Everybody wants to be the one to end our run. The seniors have to get the younger kids motivated and build team spirit; we all know that's our biggest job."

The Generals are crushing everybody.

The boys have been powered by a top-five that is among the best in the area, Conor Lyons, Chris Benevento, Scott Goodrich, Jon Hills and Sam Malabre. They are part of a team that returns this fall after finishing fifth in the Division 2 All-State last year while the girls took second.

The girls, meanwhile, have been getting contributions from several runners. Alison Lanois, Kerry Phelan, freshman Emily Horgan, Carrie Goodrich, Sarah Duffy, Claire Pacione, Meg Blatchford, Emily Senning and Melissa Bain are the top contributors on a team that's shown depth.

Hopkinton sweeps Holliston in cross country

Wicked Local, Hopkinton - by Lou Ottaviani
September 24, 2010

'Every time we meet up with Holliston we bring out the best in each other,'' said Hopkinton girls coach Brian Hall. 'This wasn't an easy meet for either team as almost every Holliston girl ran a personal best by running an average of almost a minute-and-a-half over the previous meet in which they had upset Westwood. We have a nice rivalry going and a great amount of respect for each other.''

The Hiller girls, led by Kellie Lodge's first-place finish, defeated Holliston 25-30 to improve to 3-0. Lodge finished in 17:36, which is the sixth-best time on the 30-year-old 2.85-mile course.

From there the race got interesting. With less than a half mile remaining, Holliston's Jill Rosati, Lizzy Gabour, Anna Mannello and Kaylee Kozubal were all involved in a very close battle with the Hillers' Catie Mauska. Rosati finished third in 18:38.

Hingham boys cross country nabs top three spots in tri-meet

Wicked Local, HIngham - by William Wassersug
September 23, 2010

There were lots of things for the Hingham boys cross country team to be pleased with on Tuesday’s sweep of Quincy/North Quincy and Scituate at Hingham.

Michael BaccariFor one thing, Hingham boys took the first three spots of the meet, and that was without the services of Michael McConville, who was sick.

Instead, Michael Baccari, Steven Lamonde and Drew Noble swept the top three spots for Hingham, followed by Kevin McCallum, Will Donovan and Collin Wilkinson, who finished five six and seven.

“This was a very good day,” Hingham coach Dave Jewett said. “I’m thrilled we won. Michael Bacarri won today. It was his first win as a cross country runner. He earned it. He didn’t sneak in. He earned the win I was really impessed by his confidence.”

Baccari finished 15 seconds ahead of Lamonde with a 16:33 time on the 2.88 mile course.

Cross country gets first win at home

The Dartmouth - by Jack Barrett
September 23, 2010

The meet was held at Dartmouth, giving the Big Green a competitive edge, according to men’s co-captain Tom Robbins ’11.

“Our team did very well,” Robbins said. “We’ve shown that we have a dominant top group that is backed up by strong runners ready to take their place if they falter. The key to winning the meet was a freshman, John Bleday, stepping up into the fifth spot for our team and giving us the edge against Yale. It’s all about having a top five that can place near the top of any race.”

Hamilton-Wenham Cross Country puts best foot forward

Wicked Local, Hamilton - by Dom Nicastro
September 1, 2010

Numbers are strong, and the H-W harriers have put in the time in the offseason as the girls look to defend the Division 4 Eastern Mass. title and perhaps one-up themselves with their second state title in three years; and the boys, meanwhile, plan to stay in the top five in the state.

“I’ve observed both teams, and so far it looks like everybody did a very good job of getting ready in the summer,” said Steve Sawyer, the coach and architect behind the success of each team. “A lot of them went to cross country camp. We also had three emerging elites runners [Conor Lyons, Alison Lanois, Claire Pacione], and everyone else has trained on their own. We’re off to a very good start, and I’m definitely pleased with the first couple of practices.”

The elite group runs out of Boston.
