"The Emerging Elites program has helped me a lot in school. It has taught me that I need to work just as hard at running as I do in school. It gives me not only a reason to push to do my running, but the program has also taught me to push in school."

Gabriel Pacione (1990-2008)

Why not go out on a limb? Isn't that where the fruit is? -Frank Scully

Gabe Pacione was an exceptional athlete, and more importantly, a stellar young man who made our world a better place. We are terribly saddened by our loss of Gabe.

Gabe was certainly "one of a kind" - gifted, outgoing & sincere. We count ourselves among the privileged who were graced with Gabe's great love for his family, his friends, his teammates and his sport. Gabe touched each one of us and he will be sorely missed. The entire Emerging Elites extended family send their condolences to the Pacione family.

May 1: Early spring race results

Congratulations to Ari Garber of North Falmouth, MA for breaking the Moses Brown school record in the 1500m with a time of 4:55! One week earlier, Garber also broke her own school record in the 3000m delivering a 10:24 performance.

Junior Emily Lanois of Hamilton-Wenham had a major breakthrough in the 2-mile with a time of 11:12.

Dartmouth-bound Alex Tarnoff is closing in on the Belmont Hill school record in the 400m, running just one second shy of it with a 51.9. He also ran an impressive 23.1 in the 200m.

Steven Izen, a junior at Belmont Hill, ran 11.00 in the 100m twice this spring!

Junior Will Gibbons is extremely valuable for Belmont Hill, doubling up in the distance events this spring. He ran a 2:07 in the 800m and a 4:24 in the 1500m.

Last but not least, congratulations to Lee Milne, a 7th grader at Dover-Sherborne Middle School. Milne recently ran the Heartbreak Hill International Youth Race on April 20th winning her age group with a time of 6 minutes flat!

Apr 22: Tarnoff works Boston Marathon

The following article appeared in the Weston Town Crier on April 22nd.

WESTON - Watching Belmont Hill senior Alex Tarnoff, a Weston resident, streak along the straight aways on the track, you would never know that he's probably one of the most laid back people you'll meet.

Off the track, he's not too different from his role model, Jimmy Buffett, whom he admires because he's "so chill.''

But as his running performance proves, Tarnoff is ambitious and driven. This spring, Tarnoff brings his cool determination and passion for the sport of running to an internship with TRACS, Inc., a Newton-based sports marketing and event management company.

The company is responsible for managing the John Hancock Elite Athlete Village during the Boston Marathon. Twenty-nine elite international athletes will made their home in the Village during the week leading up to the race, and Tarnoff was close at hand.

"It sounded like a pretty cool program,'' says Tarnoff. "It's neat to be in such close contact with the really good runners. That was appealing.''

This year, Tarnoff's work in the John Hancock Elite Athlete Village will give him a hands-on experience. Tarnoff recalls, "Two years ago my mom got all-access passes, so I watched the marathon from the finish line, and I went to some of the press conferences. But I'm excited to have worked in the Village this year.''

He had significant responsibilities for this year's 112th Boston Marathon, including writing articles for the TRACS website, helping hosts pick up athletes at Logan Airport, and assisting in the WBZ-TV Channel 4 studio on race day - where real-time updates are obtained and ultimately broadcast on live television. Though he will not be working full time for TRACS, his supporting role will provide an inspiring diversion from schoolwork in his final months of high school.

The internship is part of Tarnoff's "Senior Project'' at the Belmont Hill School. He learned about the John Hancock Elite Athlete Village through Fred Treseler, founder and president of TRACS and head coach of the Emerging Elites training program. Tarnoff trains with Emerging Elites during the off-seasons.

Tarnoff won't just be working with runners this spring, he'll also be running track for his own team at Belmont Hill, where he competes in the 200-meter and 400-meter events. He started running in eighth grade to stay in shape for soccer, and he fell in love with the sport.

The Emerging Elites program has provided Tarnoff with regular training year-round. Somewhat ironically, he got involved when Treseler worked with John Hancock to organize last year's Boston Marathon. Tarnoff's mother, Donna, worked at John Hancock and met Treseler at a meeting. They got to talking, and Treseler thought Tarnoff would be a good candidate for the Emerging Elites program.

"(Emerging Elites) is a good way to get consistent training throughout the year, and I feel the workouts are helping,'' notes Tarnoff. He has been training with Treseler for a year and plans to continue his running career at Dartmouth College next year as a sprinter. He says, "I'm excited about being on a focused team year-round.''

Treseler's coaching pays off in track
By Marvin Pave

Longtime Newton resident Fred Treseler has come full circle during his 35 years as a track coach at the high school, collegiate, and Olympic levels.

Treseler, whose home sits near the top of Heartbreak Hill along the Boston Marathon route, now trains promising middle- and high-school track athletes through his Emerging Elites program.

Treseler's recent pupils include Framingham High junior Camille Murphy, Wellesley resident Jenny Donnelly, a junior at Noble & Greenough School in Dedham, and Belmont Hill School senior Alex Tarnoff of Weston.

The Emerging Elites train indoors at MIT's Gordon Track and outdoors at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill.

Murphy improved her times during the indoor season in the 1,000 meters by 10 seconds to reach a personal best, 3:00.47. She was fourth at the MIAA Divisional and All-Class meets and sixth at the New Englands. "Camille's mental toughness was evident," said Treseler.

Donnelly, who had never won a cross-country race prior to last fall, established herself as a top-tier runner when she finished first at the Independent School League and New England Prep championships.

"She's definitely shown her drive to succeed," said Treseler, who noted that Donnelly improved her time in the indoor mile from 6:01 to 5:12.34, logged at the Boston University Invitational.

Tarnoff, who will attend Dartmouth, spent the winter season racing competitively on two surfaces, as captain of the Belmont Hill ski team and running the 200- and 400-meter events for the indoor track squad. He is also captain of Belmont Hill's outdoor track team, which will defend its 2007 New England title this spring.

"Alex's commitment to train year-round has produced some notable results," Treseler noted.
