FLAME OF THE MARATHON RUN - YOUTH

The Flame of the Marathon is a symbol of peace, comradeship, collaboration and cultural exchange, which will eternally burn in Hopkinton. The 'Flame' is a visual reminder to the citizens of Hopkinton and to all people who visit Hopkinton of the twin-city relationship between Hopkinton and Marathon, Greece. The Flame's presence in Hopkinton highlights the community's prominent role as a steward in the sport of marathon and its obligation to ensure the success of marathons.

The Board of Selectmen of the Town of Hopkinton announced the first annual Flame of the Marathon Run, taking place on April 19, 2008. Local school children ran with the 'Flame' from the original Boston Marathon starting line in Ashland to Hopkinton Common. Held outside of Greece for the first time, the Flame of the Marathon Run provided a memorable opportunity for the citizens of Hopkinton to host an event designed to inspire children, educate them about the marathon and encourage their participation in athletics.
